Mayor Pat McCrory has enhanced transportation choices through concourse expansion at the airport, increase in lane miles of local and state roads, and the development of a rapid transit system with an expansion and overhaul of the City’s bus system.

Development of new Regional Concourse with 32 gates and expansion of International Concourse at Charlotte-Douglas

Spent $1.93 billion for local and state roads from FY 95 – FY05, including $276 million in local bond money for road widenings and intersection improvements and secured $1.6 billion in state funds for Independence Blvd, I-485 development and I-77 and I-85 widenings

Expansion of I-77 with the development of the state’s first HOV lanes

Developed Comprehensive 2025 rapid transit and land-use plan, incorporating light rail and buses

Secured $199 million in federal funds for the South Corridor, established federal government’s support for our light rail and rapid transit program

Transit ridership has increased for six straight years, with a dramatic 34% increase between 1998 and 2004

Initiated a 20-year transportation and land-use plan to keep Charlotte moving and reduce urban sprawl
